DRAFT ... of news to post on 24/25 jan 94 ... DRAFT

greetings, etc, from the mit e-club:

o	e-club member david emerson is at the university of
	massachusetts medical center in worcester, after suffering
	a massive stroke circa thursday/friday of last week, and
	not being discovered until sunday when a concerned friend
	broke down the front door to his wayland home and probably
	saved his life.  david is in a near-coma, and those of you
	who have met him and know of his numerous unfinished projects
	and desire to do physics and science consulting to start-ups
	will know immediately just how sad this tragic happening is.
	david is the great grandson of ralph waldo emerson, and his
	family has produced inventors and entrepreneurs who founded
	a number of well known companies, including emerson radio and
	the iron lung research lab and works in cambridge, where as a 
	as a kid i met several emersons , and became fascinated with the
	science behind this important branch of medical technology.

	for any who wish to, i'll send a separate detailed account of
	david's story and condition, and the latest news from family.

o	e-club regular meeting reminder, today in bartos at 6:30pm:

	or should we all attend the 6.270 competition, 
	final rounds at 6pm in 26-100?  bring your kids!
	i think you'll find us at the competition!
	
o	networking from hospital bedside:

	sorry for the recent lack of reminder notices and
	randomness re other of the activities i'm personally
	responsible for.  i just spent five days under orders
	to rest while we try to determine what's been `cleverly'
	disguising itself as a combination of pre-appendicitis,
	a very nasty flu, or some other virus, and all this on
	a background of recurring chronic fatigue syndrome.

o	stress reduction with yoga classes at mit:

	the e-club's official method of stress reduction, and
	just-in-time for the start of spring term!
	next this list should hear from mit phd candidate in
	aero/astro andy rothstein who will post the spring term
	schedule for his weekly yoga classes at mit, which
	this term andy will be tailoring to those looking for
	ways to relax and beat the stresses they're experiencing.

o	congrats to jamie rosen re lemelson fellowship award:

	e-club member jamie rosen, harvard '92, who has taken
	on one of our projects pretty much single-handedly,
	the establishment of an african-american kids' inventors
	and entrepreneurs club in dorchester, through boston's
	gang peace, inc, has indeed won one of the first of
	hampshire college's lemelson fellowships.  jamie left
	for western massachusetts yesterday and we'll be hearing
	more from him and about the fellowship program in the
	weeks to come.  again, congratulations jamie!

o	party, networking recap, review of _jir_, thanks to all who helped:

	reviews are in the works, and additional news of the _jir_
	and marc abraham's projects will be sent as a separate note.

o	iap'94 e-club series recap, thanks to all who helped:

	and thanks again to joe hadzima '73, for his annual
	series on b-plan preparation and first-hand accounts from
	an increasingly interesting variety of alum who have
	started-up so many mit spin-off companies.

o	sem095 announce & syl, guests & cases schedule:

	i will be teaching part two of my undergraduate seminar
	on high-tech start-ups at mit this spring term.
	again, it's a six credit course that meets every tuesday
	at 7-9pm in 66-148.  this term we'll concentrate on
	market research, b-plan preparation, legal issues, selling,
	fund raising and marketing.  several optional day-time
	sessions will be open to the entire mit community.
	mit-toyota prof. mert flemings, head of the department
	of materials science and engineering is once again
	the faculty advisor for this series.  (details this week)

o	sloan _new ventures_ course, 15.375, designed & taught by
	prof. eric von hippel, meets on mondays 4-6pm at sloan,
	and i'll be there to help kick it off again this term,
	maybe helping througout the term, and prof. von hippel
	will appear at my seminar from time-to-time.  this new
	approach affords undergraduate students a chance
	to meet and learn directly from von hippel, who traditionally
	keeps spaces open in _new ventures_ first for second-year
	graduate students.  the first meeting in his class
	is always standing room only, so get there early!

o	prof. harry west's 24 feb video conference from mit to
	c. 300 middle and high schools on engineering entrepreneurship:

	a separate note i'll post next describes this program, and
	what kinds of participation we're looking for.

o	hssp courses for high school kids at mit this spring:

	the mit educational studies program's high school studies
	program, in it's 39th year, provides 7th-12th graders
	from the greater boston area with ten consecutive saturdays
	of as many as three courses each saturday.  once again
	i'll be teaching courses on invention, entrepreneurship,
	history of mit start-ups and technology risks, all using
	athena and the internet as a basis for on-line research,
	communications and an introduction to distance learning
	for kids who are not connected, either through their
	schools or at home.
