This is a one-page introduction to the MIT LCS Interactive Map program.  This
file is updated to reflect changes in the program, but is not necessarily
completely current.  More complete and current files are included in the
distribution.  If there is a particular point you are interested in please
feel free to ask.  You may also obtain the most current ReadMe and Status
files, these may describe a version later than the "release", however.


----------------	What does it do?

This program draws a map of network connectivity and allows interactive
examination of information about various components including whether hosts
can be reached over the network (using ICMP echo for IP and STATUS for Chaos).
It initializes itself from static data stored in the local file system and
therefore does not need to access the network in order to get running.  The
program does not automatically determine a layout for a given network, these
must be set up in Geometry files beforehand.  Several sample Geometry files
are provided to give a base for designing your own.


----------------	What is supported

The program is apparently quite portable and runs out-of-the-box on lots of
systems.  It uses 4BSD sockets and runs on most 4BSD based machines.  It
should be easily ported to any machine with this base.  The Status file has a
complete list of the systems we know it to run on as-is.  Interactive display
is supported on X Window System (Version 11 is tested, a Version 10 module is
included but hasn't been tested for a couple of releases).  Hardcopy print out
is available in Black&White PostScript or in Color on a Tek-4692.  Color
PostScript should be trivial, I just don't have a printer to test it on.

ReadMe	more detailed description of release and how to install it.  Mostly
	of use when installing the release but might be of interest if you
	are considering whether you want to get it. [6 pages]
Status	describes, in more detail, what the current status is.  What is
	supported and major restrictions.  Fairly general. [3 pages]
ToDo	contains a list of things that I think should be done to/for the
	program, this is much more detailed (and much longer) than the Status
	file.  Mostly of use to those wishing to contribute by writing code.
Update	is a reverse chronological list of changes to the master.  This might
	be useful to see what has been changed since an earlier version.


----------------	How to get a copy

Since the program is still in development, I like to keep in touch with
anybody who is using with it.  You should send mail asking to be added to
one of the mailing lists (see ReadMe for details) to MAP-Request@LCS.MIT.Edu.
To obtain a copy of the current "released" version or one of the files above
use anonymous FTP to the host FTP.LCS.MIT.Edu and change to directory nets.
The current release is in a compressed tar image as map.tar.Z, other versions
(later, not yet released, or earlier, for compatibility) are in that
directory.  The directory also contains updated versions of the data files and
the other files mentioned above, but note that these may not be compatible
with older versions of the program.
